Ladin Culture Dolomites
It has not been clearly established exactly who the first inhabitants of the valley were, even though it is believed that they were of Celtic origin.
When the Roman Empire annexed the Alpine regions the population assimilated a common or "vulgar" form of Latin from the Roman conquerors, developing a romanticised language in parallel to Italian, French and Spanish. As such, the Ladin language was born.
Nowadays, Ladino is spoken in the Swiss Canton dei Grigioni, the Dolomites, Comelico and the Friuli Region.
