These suggestions are Ursula and Hugo Pizzinini's favourites things to do, restaurants to eat or places to go, not only in the Dolomites

NATURE AND SPORT

  • Armentara meadows, like heaven on earth under the S. Croce mountain, near La Valle.

  • View from the rifugio Bioch to the DOLOMITES at 6500 ft. Ask Markus, the owner, for explanation:

  • Fanes, one of the most beautiful places in the Dolomites, it takes about 4 hours from the Capanna Alpina to the Rifugio Fanes
    More informations at the reception.

  • Flowering time in the Dolomites and alpine roses, from June to end of August. Best around Puez and Piz Sorega. Take a rest and soak in the parfumes and colors.

    Flowering time and alpine roses

  • Gardenaccia, the trail starts in La Villa, just west of the curch and ends at the rifugio Gardenaccia. For some people it may look a little steep, but the views are fantastic. Look for chamois in this region!

  • Golf Club Alta Badia, our guests get a special reduction on green fees.

  • Lagazuoi, get up with the cable car and enjoy the view from this peak. You could get the galleries to get back down. (helmet and light required) Fantastic views of the Dolomites.

  • Kaiserweg, the hike starts at the cable car station of Lagazuoi and takes you to the top of the mountain, on the original trails of WWI.
Duration about 2 hours, some parts a little steep.

  • Lago Scotoni, this little lake is fantastic if you hike up almost running and then cool down in the cool water (temperature 39° F).

    Larch in September

  • Larches in September, when their colour turn golden and the air gets fresh.

  • Malga Valparola, easy walk from the Hotel Gran Ancei, following the trail number 18. Once you reach the farmhouse, try the fresh ricotta and buttermilk. (only when the farmer is on site).

  • Mountain biking on Piz La Villa at 6500 ft. Take the cable car in La Villa and once on top follow the signs to Rifugio Bioch. Ask Markus, the owner for the right path to San Cassiano.

  • Never seen the Dolomites from above?
Call the reception for reservation of a helicopter tour or for paragliding.

    Sasso Santa Croce

  • Passo delle Erbe, where a beautiful hike around the Puez starts. Make sure to stop for lunch at the Ütia de Börz. Ask for Fritz, the host, and try his famous Speck and Canederli.

  • S. Croce, the trail number 15 starts nearby the hotel. Follow the signs and try the fried eggs and the Kaiserschmarrn, once you arrive at the rifugio (approx 2 hours ½).

  • Sunrise at Sass Stria, with a mountain guide.
Hotel & Spa Rosa Alpina - Relais & Chateaux. San Cassiano in Badia, South Tyrol, Dolomites, Italy

  • Sentiero dei larici, take the trail number 15 nearby the hotel and walk until the renovated mill.
  • Settsass, not a very difficult hike but rather long. It starts at Passo Valparola at 6500 ft and takes you to Rifugio Pralongia and from there to San Cassiano (approx 4 ½ hours)
  • Hotel & Spa Rosa Alpina - Relais & Chateaux. San Cassiano in Badia, South Tyrol, Dolomites, Italy Settsass

  • Val Travenanzes, fantastic day hike through the Dolomites, that starts behind the Lagazuoi mountain and ends near Cortina d'Ampezzo, where the return has to be arranged through a taxi.
  • Sunset at  passo Valparola, to reach by car, spectacular views of the Badia Valley especially when the sun goes down and the pale Dolomites turn red, a fenomenon called "Enrosadira" in our language.
  • Sunset at the Valparola pass, by car, approximately 15 minutes drive from the hotel Rosa Alpina. Stop at the bar at Valparola pass and turn towards San Cassiano, breathtaking!

    SHOPPING

  • Bolzano a beautiful city, a mix of cultures, open air markets, top brand shops, for the ladies we reccomend the Boutique Venier where Olga the owner will be of great help. Don't forget a visit to the Ötzi museum. Stop for lunch at the newly open Restaurant Zur Kaiserkron, run by the Pizzinini Family of the Hotel Rosa Alpina.

  • Brunico at only 19 miles from San Cassiano this small city is caracterized by the antique center with many handicraft shops like Loden fabrics.
  • Cortina d'Ampezzo, glamour, high society, shopping, "aperitivo" at the Posta or at the Enoteca Cortina. At about 16 miles from the hotel.
  • Pederoa, this small village after Pedraces, towards Brunico, has many local handicraft shops.

    GASTRONOMIA
  • Aperitivo at the Ciasa Alexander just across the street. Stay on the terrace to look at "life" in our small village. Especially on Sundays at about 10 am, after church.

  • Delizius, after the church, this shop is specialized in local products.
  • Formaggio del Lüch da Pcei, follow the signs from the hotel and visit this farmhouse where the best cheese of the region is produced.
  • Genziana, this very bitter grappa with Genziana roots is said to heal every pain and illness. At the Hotel bar or at the rifugio Ütia de Börz.
  • Kaiserschmarrn this dessert with Austrian origins has become a classical dish in every rifugio and restaurant. Find the best version...
  • Knödel/Canederli try these bread dumplings at maso Runch in Pedraces, in S. Martino at the restaurant "Dasser" or at the Ütia de Börz (ask Fritz, the host)
  • Lago Sompunt this informal but very nice local restaurant in the middle of the woods, in Pedraces, also has a small lake where you can fish your own trouts.
  • Porcini mushrooms, our area has the best! There are strict laws when collecting them. Inform yourself at the reception.
  • Restaurants, in Alta Badia. The highest concentration of Michelin strarred restaurants in the Alps. Try the St. Hubertus at the hotel with two Michelin Stars, the Siriola in San Cassiano and the Stüa de Michil in Corvara. Also to try, the Lech da Sompunt in Pedraces and the Stria in Colfosco. Book well in advance, just ask at the reception.
  • Rifugio Scotoni, a 40 minutes hike from the Capanna Alpina takes you to this fantastic rifugio and restaurant. Continue the hike up to the lake. For lunch order the mixed grill, it's worth it. In winter the Rifugio is reachable
    by skis from Lagazuoi.
  • Wines to take away, ask our sommelier Christian to see the wine cellar and choose your bottles.

  • Wine producers, visit
    www.manincor.it
    www.lageder.com

for some of the best wine producers of our area.

    CULTURE & SPA

  • Church of San Cassiano

  • Galleries through the Lagazuoi mountain, constructed during WWI from the Italians and Austrians.
  • Ladin Museum in S.Martino a really nice little museum ideal during rainy days
  • Meditation Walk, a religious itinerary of about 30 minutes in the middle of a beautiful forest. It starts at the Bar Saré at 2.4 miles from the hotel.
  • Spa - dial 159 for booking your treatments in advance. Indulge in Luxury spa treatments and try our massages after a hard hike.

    AROUND and ON THE WAY

    Ristorante Schöneck
    at Falzes/Pfalzen
Just outside the small city of Brunico, this impeccable restaurnt is one of our favourites. Karl the Chef and Sigi, his brother who overlooks the service will take care of all your needs. www.schoeneck.it

Osteria al Castelletto in Pedeguarda di Follina near Treviso, in the Prosecco area is half way from/to Venice. This "must see" place is "just" an Osteria, but be prepared to see red hot Ferraris and Bentleys parked outside. Ask for Clemy, the owner. She will be very happy to hear that you got the tip from the Rosa Alpina. www.alcastelletto.com

Hotel Londra Palace in Venezia, at the end we found a nice, not overpriced little hotel in Venice, facing the Canal Grande and easily accessible with the vaporetti or water taxi. Mauro Zanotti, the manager is a regular guest at the Rosa Alpina and also a good friend. www.hotelondra.it

A secret place to eat near MILAN??
With no doubt it is the restaurant of Giancarlo Morelli in Seregno.
Try his Risotto allo Zafferano...you will keep dreaming of it for weeks.
    L'OSTERIA DEL POMIROEU
    http://www.pomiroeu.it/

If near Verona, don't miss the Ristorante Perbellini, a MUST!
    www.perbellini.com

Near Venice, at Campagna Lupia, a tiny village, there is an exceptional fish restaurant called "Antica Osteria da Cera". They serve the best fish ever!
The address is, Antica Osteria da Cera, Via Marghera, 26 - 30010 Lughetto (VE) Tel. 041 5185009

In the M A L D I V E S  our friends run a fantastic hotel in the north Male atoll, called B A R O S. It is probably the best hotel of the Maldives.
Have a look at their homepage at www.baros.com . For enquiries and help ask for Pascal.
